My Morning Jacket Goes ‘Walking To New Orleans’ At Jazz Fest

Nearly a decade since their last performance at the Fairgrounds, My Morning Jacket returned to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Sunday. The band nodded to the Crescent City during their Jazz Fest set by debuting covers of “Walking To New Orleans” and “Time Is On My Side.”

Frontman Jim James led his bandmates through their first performance of Fats Domino’s “Walking To New Orleans” to open. The location-appropriate cover debut was followed by a run of classics “Mahgeetah,” “Anytime,” “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 1,” “Spring (Among The Living)” and “Dancefloors.”

My Morning Jacket are currently touring in support of their new album, is, and fit four songs from the LP into their Sunday afternoon setlist. The first was the “Time Waited” that trailed “Dancefloors.” Next came staple “Off The Record” along with is cuts “Squid Ink” and “Die For It.”

From there, the group served up “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2” and worked “Golden” into their debut cover of the Jerry Ragovoy-penned “Time Is On My Side.” The song was recorded by legendary NOLA singer Irma Thomas in April of 1964, just months before The Rolling Stones scored a hit with their version. Thomas also performed “Time Is On My Side” at Jazz Fest on Sunday during her guest appearance with Galactic.

The set rolled on with Z favorite “Lay Low” and “Lemme Know,” the final offering from is of the afternoon. My Morning Jacket then performed the title track from 2011’s Circuital and said farewell with the beloved “Wordless Chorus.”
