My Morning Jacket Wraps 5-Night Louisville Run With Special Guests & Rare Covers

My Morning Jacket concluded their five-show “Come Home Again: A Celebration Of Louisville” residency at The Louisville Palace Theater on Wednesday. The hometown heroes explored the depths of their extensive repertoire during the finale, delivering a setlist that featured Bob Dylan and Marvin Gaye covers they hadn’t performed since 2017 and 2014, respectively.

The quintet drew material from nine of their ten studio albums during the final performance of their diverse run, which saw them play over 100 different songs without any repeats across the five shows. MMJ also continued a trend of welcoming Louisville-based special guests by bringing out members of opening band Bendigo Fletcher.

Bendigo Fletcher frontman Ryan Anderson and bandmates Andrew Shupert and Evan Wagner contributed vocally to the “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” that began My Morning Jacket’s set. Anderson returned after a few songs to duet with Jim James and play harmonica on At Dawn standout “Just Because I Do.”

Later, My Morning Jacket broke out Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You,” which was last played over seven years prior on December 29, 2017. The five-piece went on to dust off “Don’t Do It” towards the end of their set. The song, originally recorded by Marvin Gaye and covered often by The Band, had previously been shelved since January 29, 2014.

Jacket went heavy on cuts from 2011’s Circuital, including the aforementioned “Wonderful (The Way I Feel),” “You Wanna Freak Out” and “First Light” along with the pairing of “Slow Slow Tune” and “Victory Dance” that started the encore. Jim James and his bandmates punctuated the show with “Squid Ink” off their recently released album, is, and “Phone Went West.”
