My Morning Jacket Honors Prince With Grace Cummings In Minneapolis

On Sunday, My Morning Jacket played a concert in Minneapolis at The Armory, which was the eve of the anniversary of the untimely death of beloved Minneapolis musician Prince in 2016. MMJ covered “Purple Rain” with opener Grace Cummings, after earlier in the evening bringing out Trampled by Turtles frontman Dave Simonett for a song.

My Morning Jacket paid tribute to Prince several times following his death on April 21, 2016, at age 57, covering several of his songs that year. “Purple Rain,” one of Prince’s best-known songs with a close affiliation to Minneapolis, was one of the songs MMJ covered in tribute to The Purple One, with their most recent performance prior to Sunday’s appearance coming back in 2017.

The Armory version of “Purple Rain” came in the middle of the encore, with Cummings emerging between MMJ takes on “Victory Dance” and “One Big Holiday.”

Minnesota native Dave Simonett, who fronts the Duluth-born Trampled By Turtles, was tapped to join My Morning Jacket in the middle of their main set. Simonett joined MMJ frontman Jim James on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel),” as he has several times before.
