Hudson Freeman Goes Post-Apocalyptic On New Album ‘Doom Country’

Singer-songwriter Hudson Freeman's new album, Doom Country, arrives on November 6, his first record on Mom + Pop. The Waxahachie, Texas-born, Brooklyn-based artist previewed the LP today with the single “Fell Ass Backwards.”

Doom Country follows Hudson Freeman’s 2025 album, is a Folk Artist, which spun the breakout single “If You Know Me.” Born to Evangelical missionary parents, is a Folk Artist saw Freeman examining faith, belonging and anxiety in the digital age. On Doom Country, Freeman looked to his influences such as Sufjan Stevens and Bruce Springsteen for inspiration.

Doom Country “is my personal, post–apocalyptic road trip album through America in the vein of Illinois, Nebraska, and Ghosts of the Great Highway,” Freeman stated.

“Sonically, it’s a reference to the genre play of lofi sludge with folk and americana as much as it is about American apocalypticism and having grown up Evangelical while now living through the weird end times feelings of the 2020s.”

Today’s single, “Fell Ass Backwards,” follows Freeman’s previously released Doom Country single, “I-40.” An “immediate earworm,” as per press materials, “Fell Ass Backwards” contains the sludge Hudson speaks of in contrast to the galloping, fuzz-laden “I-40.”
