Tyler Childers Aces The ‘Greatest Story Ever Told’ With Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros

Bob Weir will release a 50th-anniversary edition of his 1972 solo album, Ace, with an expanded deluxe reissue arriving on January 13. Weir previewed the release with a live recording of “Greatest Story Ever Told” featuring singer-songwriter Tyler Childers.

Childers was among the special guests who participated in a pair of celebratory concerts performed by last April at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. Both nights featured Childers singing lead on “Greatest Story Ever Told” to begin complete performances of Ace in its entirety.

Written by Weir, lyricist Robert Hunter and Grateful Dead/Dead & Company drummer Mickey Hart, “Greatest Story Ever Told” was one of eight songs that appeared on the original Ace tracklist. Weir recorded Ace with his Dead bandmates, and along with “Greatest Story Ever Told,” all but one of the tracks (“Walk In The Sunshine”) became live staples for the band, including “Black-Throated Wind,” “Playing in the Band,” “Looks Like Rain,” “Mexicali Blues,” “One More Saturday Night” and “Cassidy.”

Others on the Radio City stage with Weir and Childers included Wolf Bros. bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, along with The Wolfpack cellist Alex Kelly, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown.
