concluded a two-night celebration of the 50th anniversary of Bob Weir‘s debut solo album, Ace last night at Radio City Music Hall. Brittney Spencer and Tyler Childers each sat-in at various points as they did on Saturday at the historic New York City venue, while Bobby’s Dead & Company bandmate John Mayer made a surprise guest appearance to finish off Sunday’s concert, the celebration of the 1972 LP and Wolf Bros’ tour.
Bobby went solo acoustic to start the evening with his first full performance of “She Knows What I’m Thinkin’.” Weir previously played part of “She Knows What I’m Thinkin” on March 26 in Durham, North Carolina. Next, The Wolfpack horn and string section backed the guitarist, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane on Bobby’s first “Fever” cover since March 4, 2020 before keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless emerged for “Jack Straw.”
The rest of last night’s first set was devoted to a complete Ace performance. Childers made his initial appearance of the night in leading the full ensemble through “Greatest Story Ever Told.” Then, Bob Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack went sans guests for “Black-Throated-Wind.” Next, singer-songwriter and vocalist Brittney Spencer channeled Donna Jean Godchaux to duet with Bobby on “Walk In The Sunshine” and “Looks Like Rain,” which were split by “Playing In The Band.” Weir and his tourmates capped the Ace performance with “Mexicali Blues,” a rare “One More Saturday Night” played on a day other than Saturday and “Cassidy.”
Childers came out with Weir, Was, Lane, Chimenti and Sless for a rousing take on Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” to get Sunday’s second set underway. The Wolfpack then re-emerged to back Bob Weir & Wolf Bros on a pairing of “Turn On Your Love Light” and the “Terrapin Station Suite.” From there Brittney Spencer provided powerful harmony vocals on the Sunday sermon “Samson & Delilah” before leaving the stage as “Sugar Magnolia” began.
John Mayer took the stage during “Sugar Magnolia” to hoot and hollers from the appreciative crowd. Mayer had a day off on Sunday from his current tour in support of Sob Rock. The guitarist took a fierce solo towards the end of “Sugar Magnolia” and dug in on the ensuing “Scarlet Begonias.” The ensemble complete with Mayer worked “Scarlet” into an exploratory “The Other One” that gave way to an emotional “Morning Dew.” Mayer let it rip for a bluesy solo on “Morning Dew” before helping the ensemble end the set with “Sunshine Daydream.” Bob Weir & Wolf Bros, The Wolfpack and John Mayer put an exclamation on the evening and tour with a “Not Fade Away” encore.
