My Morning Jacket enlisted Karina Rykman to open the two Michigan stops of their current summer tour culminating in Detroit last night. Rykman joined MMJ for a rousing “Run Thru” that encompassed a cover of Radiohead‘s “National Anthem” late in their set at the Masonic Temple Theatre on Tuesday.
Karina Rykman and her band supported the Louisville-based quintet in Grand Rapids on Monday and then kicked off the action in Detroit last night. Rykman revealed she was “blown away” when “one of [her] favorite bands of all time” asked her to open when the shows were announced.

My Morning Jacket treated fans in Michigan to vastly different shows as they didn’t repeat any songs between Grand Rapids and Detroit. Jim James and company had a surprise in store to start by opening with the first “Heartbreakin Man” of 2024. “Heartbreakin’ Man” is featured on MMJ’s debut album, 1999’s The Tennessee Fire, a record also represented in Detroit by “Picture Of You” and “I Will Be There When You Die.”
The five-piece followed the “Heartbreakin Man” opener with “Evil Urges,” the title track from their 2008 LP. “Thank You Too!” and both parts of “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream” off Evil Urges were played later in the night. Jacket’s Detroit setlist was heavy on staples including “Off The Record,” “Wordless Chorus,” “Steam Engine” and “Gideon.”
Karina Rykman energed at the end of My Morning Jacket’s main set after the band had started “Run Thru.” Rykman augmented the five-piece with Karina and Tom Blankenship providing double bass action. “Run Thru” off Jacket’s 2003 record, It Still Moves, featured a jam on Slayer‘s “Raining Blood.”
Rykman had the honors of starting up “The National Anthem.” While Karina has frequently performed the classic featured on Radiohead’s iconic 2000 studio album, Kid A, My Morning Jacket debuted their “The National Anthem” cover at the band’s One Big Holiday destination event in Mexico earlier this year.
Jim James belted out the lyrics as Rykman showed off her fuzz bass tone. Karina and Jim banged heads while squaring off on the Radiohead cover. The short romp on “The National Anthem” led back into “Run Thru” to close the set. Jim James and MMJ guitarist Carl Broemel dueted on “I Will Be There When You Die” and honored Motown with a performance of The Miracles’ “Ooo Baby Baby” to get the encore underway before the rest of the band returned for fan-favorites “Anytime” and “Mahgeetah.”
