My Morning Jacket Debuts Soulful ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay’ Cover At The Fillmore

My Morning Jacket closed out a four-show no-repeats run at The Fillmore in San Francisco on Friday night. Frontman Jim James led his bandmates through their first-ever cover of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” as the penultimate song of the run.

The quintet began Friday’s show with an adventurous “Cobra” that spanned over 16 minutes. My Morning Jacket then looked to their 1999 debut album, The Tennessee Fire, for “If All Else Fails” and followed with the beloved “Golden.” Next came George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth),” a cover first played by MMJ at their One Big Holiday destination event back in April.

My Morning Jacket rolled through a career-spanning collection of material to form the rest of the main set on Friday. Highlights included a 22-minute “Dondante” that saw the band reprise “Cobra,” a take on “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” from James’ solo repertoire and rarities “Nashville To Kentucky,” “Like A River” and “Thank You Too!”

The concert and run ended with a four-song encore. Up first was a pairing of Evil Urges standouts “Highly Suspicious” and “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2.” Then, My Morning Jacket debuted their version of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay.” Otis Redding wrote the 1968 hit in Sausalito just miles away from The Fillmore. The band chose fan-favorite “Wordless Chorus” to cap the concert.
