My Morning Jacket Debuts Radiohead, Nirvana & Other Choice Cover Songs In Mexico

My Morning Jacket recently wrapped their annual One Big Holiday destination event in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The band’s second of three performances, held on Friday night, was bolstered by several cover debuts as fans were treated to selections by Radiohead, Nirvana, Bob Marley and Pet Shop Boys.

“Run Thru” kicked off Friday’s main set and segued into My Morning Jacket’s first run-through of Radiohead’s “The National Anthem,” which was followed by a return to “Run Thru.” The next cover premiere came a few songs later when frontman Jim James led his bandmates through Bob Marley’s reggae staple “Turn Your Lights Down Low.”

Further into the set came the first My Morning Jacket performance of Pet Shop Boys’ hit “West End Girls.” James incorporated a bit of Madonna’s “Dress You Up” into the penultimate cover debut of the night. The subsequent “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2” contained elements of “West End Girls.” MMJ included a recording of “West End Girls” on their Chapter 2: Learning rarities compilation that came out in 2004.

The set ended with MMJ honoring Kurt Cobain on the 30th anniversary of his untimely death by premiering their arrangement of Nirvana’s “All Apologies.” Other notable inclusions in the setlist were the first “Come Closer” since 2012 and MMJ’s first time playing “Here In Spirit” from James’ solo catalog.
