My Morning Jacket Kicks Off ‘No Repeats’ Fillmore Run With Bob Dylan Cover Bust Out

My Morning Jacket launched a four-show, no-repeats run at The Fillmore in San Francisco on Monday night. Opening night’s encore began with a bust out of a rarely-played Bob Dylan cover.

The concert started with “At Dawn,” which was one of two songs from their 2001 album of the same name that made Monday’s setlist along with “Honest Man” later in the set. MMJ then pulled up “O Is the One That Is Real,” another less frequently played song from their early days.

The third song, “Master Plan” from 2003’s It Still Moves, gave a nod to the historic venue by infusing elements of the Grateful Dead classic “China Cat Sunflower.” Guitarist Carl Broemel’s solo catalog was sourced for “Carried Away” and frontman Jim James’ solo efforts “A New Life” and “Here in Spirit” helped fill in Monday’s setlist as well.

One of the biggest surprises was the late-set performance of “Librarian.” MMJ had shelved the track off 2008’s Evil Urges since 2018 before checking it out last night at The Fillmore.

Another bust out came at the start of Monday’s encore when James led his cohorts through a take on Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” According to Setlist.fm, he unexpected cover came nearly eight years to the day since My Morning Jacket last performed “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.”
