Watch My Morning Jacket & J. Mascis Cover The Rolling Stones At Mempho

My Morning Jacket headlined the Saturday night action this past weekend at the 2023 Mempho Music Festival at Memphis’ Radians Amphitheater on the grounds of Memphis Botanic Gardens. Jacket delivered a two-hour performance that included guest appearances from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis and Band of Horses leader Ben Bridwell.

Both J Mascis and Ben Bridwell were on hand to play with their own bands earlier in the day at Mempho. Bridwell emerged early in the 18-song set to duet with Jim James on “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” James played acoustic guitar on the cut from 2011’s Circuital.

Mascis first took the stage with MMJ towards the middle of the set for the beloved “One Big Holiday.” The guitarist/vocalist returned to help the quintet close out the evening with a version of “Dancefloors” that encapsulated a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “Happy.” My Morning Jacket debuted their take on the song from The Stones’ iconic Exile On Main St. LP back in 2015 at their One Big Holiday destination event. The rest of My Morning Jacket’s set was chock full of fan-favorites such as “Wordless Chorus,” “Gideon,” “Lay Low,” “Steam Engine” and “Anytime.” Additionally, the band looked to their most recent album, a self-titled set from 2021, for “Least Expected” and “Lucky To Be Alive.” MMJ kicks off a fall tour in Toronto on October 17.
