My Morning Jacket recently dusted off their cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Happy” for the first time in over eight years. The band delivered the Exile On Main St. cut during their set at The Peach Music Festival at Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
MMJ’s performance at Peach also saw the band debuting a song from The Beatles catalog, 1969’s “The Ballad Of John And Yoko,” three songs into their set. Keeping up the English rock legends vibe, the band busted out “Happy” as the 13th number in their 16-song set.

“Happy” kicks off side three of The Stones’ landmark 1972 double LP, Exile On Main Street. While a Mick Jagger/Keith Richards credit (as most Rolling Stone compositions are), “Happy” features Keith on lead vocals. It also boasts a classic Richards guitar riff and was one of the only songs Charlie Watts did not play drums on with longtime Stones session saxophonist Bobby Keys credited with percussion.
MMJ’s version at Peach — the first since the band debuted the cover at their 2015 One Big Holiday destination event in Mexico, as per SetlistFM stats — saw frontman Jim James handling lead vocals while keyboardist Bo Koster played the guitar riff on piano. After Jim ran the band through the tune, guitarist Carl Broemel reeled off a lead before turning things back over to Koster for a rollicking rock ‘n’ roll piano ramp up.
