My Morning Jacket helped kick off the 2023 Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday. MMJ’s guest-filled set included Margo Price, John Oates, Maggie Rogers and a beloved Muppet to close out the set.

MMJ got the set underway with “Steam Engine” from their 2003 LP, It Still Moves. Up next, the favorite “I’m Amazed” before the band brought out their first guest, Maggie Rogers, who helped the group debut the Christine McVie-penned Fleetwood Mac classic, “Say You Love Me.”

MMJ then went it alone for “Least Expected,” off the Louisville, Kentucky-born group’s 2021 self-titled album. The quintet then returned to It Still Moves with “Dancefloors” ahead of The Waterfall rarity “Only Memories Remain.” Next, the offered the title track from their 2015 LP, Circuital, before bringing it back to 2001’s At Dawn with “Hopefully.” The solo cut from My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James’s Regions of Light and Sound of God, “State of the Art (A.E.I.O.U.), then prefaced another choice cover with some friends involved once again.

The band welcomed Margo Price and John Oates for a rollicking rendition of Carole King’s classic, “I Feel The Earth Move,” the second time played by MMJ after debuting it in Guadalajara, Mexico on May 20, 2023, as per SetlistFM stats. The two stellar singers backed up Jim James on harmonies on the Tapestry standout. Guitarist Carl Broemel had some fiery stuff in store for the tune as well.
