Margo Price spent the weekend at the Minnesota State Fair, centered around sets on Saturday and Sunday at the Luther Auto Bandshell. Price made multiple tributes to Dolly Parton at the Great Minnesota Get-Together, and accompanied Tanya Tucker during the country music veteran’s Grandstand Stage appearance.
“Dolly Parton was a living saint and a national treasure,” Price wrote in response to Parton’s death last week at age 80. Price further stated:
“Her songwriting and philanthropy didn’t just reshape country music, they changed the world. She was famously non-political, but she never needed a podium. She showed us exactly where she stood through the causes she championed and the lyrics she wrote.
“Songs like ‘9 To 5’ and ‘Just Because I’m a Woman’ became anthems, for the working class, for women, for the gay community and anyone else who needed to hear they weren’t alone.”
Price incorporated “9 To 5” during her set Saturday at the fairgrounds in St. Paul. Parton wrote the Academy Award-nominated “9 To 5” for the 1980 feature film in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
Price made a surprise appearance on Sunday at the Minnesota State Fair’s “Country-Oke” session hosted by Thomas Sticha. Price’s karaoke-style performance at the MPR State Fair Station included another run through “9 To 5.”
Additionally, Price posted a video on social media backstage at Minnesota State Fair performing “9 To 5” with her bandmates. The stripped-down arrangement featured Price keeping time with her fingernails, just like Parton did on her classic recording of the song in order to mimic the sound of a typewriter.
Before her Luther Auto Bandshell set on Sunday, Price headed across the fairgrounds to the Grandstand Stage to join Tanya Tucker on her signature song, “Delta Dawn.” Tucker was followed on the Grandstage Stage by headliner Sierra Ferrell, who covered Parton’s “Here I Am” at the start of her encore.
Watch Price’s “Country-Oke” and backstage renditions of “9 To 5,” (plus her guest spot on “Delta Dawn” and Ferrell’s Dolly cover) from this weekend at the fair:
