My Morning Jacket spent the weekend at a venue frontman Jim James dubbed “The Birth Canal of the Universe.” Jacket’s two-night stand at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado saw M. Ward support and sit-in on both Friday and Saturday. Saturday’s concert also featured a surprise guest appearance from Nathaniel Rateliff on a cover of Joe Cocker via Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?”

M. Ward, Jim James’ bandmate in supergroup Monsters of Folk, emerged on Saturday for “At Dawn” early in the set. He returned to help out on “Off The Record” during the encore. The Saturday collaborations followed M. Ward adding to “Golden” and “Steam Engine” as part of a complete performance of My Morning Jacket’s 2003 studio album It Still Moves on Friday.

Jacket looked to 2005’s Z to kick off Saturday’s show with “Anytime.” MMJ went on to deliver a career-spanning set that included the aforementioned M. Ward cameo on “At Dawn,” a debut cover of Cat Stevens’ “The Wind” and numerous other highlights.

The penultimate song of My Morning Jacket’s set on Saturday was “Feelin’ Alright?” with Nathaniel Rateliff. MMJ first covered “Feelin’ Alright?” at Bonnaroo 2023. Penned by Dave Mason, Traffic recorded the song for their eponymous 1968 sophomore studio album. Just one year later Joe Cocker reworked the tune for inclusion on his debut album With A Little Help From My Friends.

My Morning Jacket lit into “Feelin’ Alright?” at Red Rocks with Jim James handling vocals. After the first verse, Colorado resident Nathaniel Rateliff sauntered on stage to sing a verse and provide vocal harmonies. Jim James and Nathaniel Rateliff danced together as Carl Broemel teared through a solo. Broemel and James dueled on guitar towards the end of “Feelin’ Alright?” to end the cover.

The Waterfall II track “Wasted” got the call to close MMJ’s main set on Friday. For the encore, the band broke up the beloved “Cobra” into four parts with “Highly Suspicious,” “Off The Record” (with M. Ward) and “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2” interspersed within. The final portion of “Cobra” gave way to “Holdin On To Black Metal” before My Morning Jacket said farewell with “Love Love Love” off their eponymous 2021 studio album.

My Morning Jacket wraps up a busy summer of touring at Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles tonight, Monday, August 28. Fleet Foxes co-headlines at Hollywood Bowl.
