Watch My Morning Jacket’s Jim James Channel Joe Cocker On Debut ‘Feelin’ Alright’ Cover At Bonnaroo

As reported, My Morning Jacket‘s instant classic late-night Saturday show at Bonnaroo included debut covers of Kate Bush‘s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” and Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?” Video of frontman Jim James leading his bandmates through a rollicking rendition of the latter, much closer in vibe to the Joe Cocker version, has surfaced and can be viewed below.

Dave Mason wrote “Feelin’ Alright?,” which he and the rest of Traffic recorded for their eponymous 1968 sophomore studio album. Joe Cocker reworked the song both in musical style and title as “Feeling Alright?” in 1969 to open his debut album With A Little Help From My Friends.

My Morning Jacket unveiled their upbeat take on “Feelin’ Alright” in the 14-slot on Bonnaroo’s What Stage this past Saturday night. James traded his electric for an acoustic guitar as Bo Koster played the signature piano figure pulled off by Artie Butler on Cocker’s With A Little Help From My Friends. Guitarist Carl Broemel sang high harmony and let the fretboard fireworks fly after Koster’s solo within the cover while bassist Tom Blankenship and drummer Patrick Hallahan anchored “Feelin’ Alright.”
