CMAT joined Brandi Carlile for a cover of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' “Islands In The Stream” at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Thursday. The tourmates paid tribute to the late Parton during Carlile’s encore after trading guest spots earlier in the night.
Carlile brought CMAT back to the stage after performing “Hold Out Your Hand” to cover the 1983 hit, which the Bee Gees wrote. “She would’ve loved you,” Carlile told CMAT in reference to Parton before the pair began the duet. Carlile then identified herself as “Kenny,” leaving the Irish singer-songwriter to handle Parton’s part.
Carlile and CMAT previously sang “Islands In The Stream” during the 1 a.m. Brandioke karaoke set Carlile hosted at Girls Just Wanna Weekend in Mexico. Recalling that loose, alcohol-fueled rendition, Carlile said the pair wanted to give the song a proper performance in Vancouver. “I’m still a bit drunk,” CMAT replied, explaining that SistaStrings gave her a bottle of wine after her set. CMAT opened Thursday’s concert and also welcomed Carlile during her own set for “I’d Want U” in a reprise of their collaboration at the Newport Folk Festival.
