Jake Simpson Continues Run Of Dave Matthews Band Sit-Ins In Kansas City

Dave Matthews Band brought back fiddler Jake Simpson last night in Kansas City for his fourth guest appearance of the summer. The show at Morton Amphitheater was also notable as the first in DMB history for which an official live recording has been made available to stream the next day.

Jake Simpson added to the last four songs of main set and returned for the final number of the concert. The Lil Smokies fiddler previously sat-in with DMB this summer in Austin on May 11 and for their two-night stand in West Palm Beach on May 29 and 30. Dave Matthews Band has also been joined by fiddlers Tatiana Hargreaves in Raleigh and Casey Driessen at both Charlotte's Truliant Amphitheater and Forest Hills Stadium in New York City.

Dave Matthews Band opened in KC with oldies “Dancing Nancies” and “The Best Of What’s Around.” The pre-Simpson portion of the show also included three tour debuts: “Spaceman,” “Fool To Think” and “Pay For What You Get.” The latter was performed by founding members Dave Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford and bassist Stefan Lessard, with guitarist Tim Reynolds and saxophonist Jeff Coffin.

Jake Simpson came out after “Pay For What You Get” to a huge roar from the crowd, who have become increasingly familiar with the talented Montana-based musician. Simpson let his fiddle rip on a run of “#41,” “Warehouse,” “Big Eyed Fish,” “Bartender” and “Tripping Billies.” He hadn’t performed both “Big Eyed Fish” and “Bartender” previously. Dave Matthews then started the encore with a solo “Take All Day” before the fiddler was back in the mix for the “Lie In Our Graves” finale.

Many fans continue to call for Jake Simpson to join Dave Matthews Band on a permanent basis. “Idk guys. I feel like we’ve been dating Jake long enough now to say it’s a real thing,” wrote a fan on Instagram in response to a post featuring a picture of Simpson.
