Lukas Nelson Busts Out The Band Classic At Bethel Woods
Watch Nelson bring “Up On Cripple Creek” back to the site where The Band performed at Woodstock in 1969.

Lukas Nelson fittingly reached into The Band’s songbook while opening for Tedeschi Trucks Band at Bethel Woods in Bethel, New York on Monday. Nelson debuted “Up On Cripple Creek” with his current band at the site of the historic 1969 Woodstock festival, where The Band was among the performers.
Robbie Robertson wrote “Up On Cripple Creek,” which featured Levon Helm on lead vocals and appeared on The Band’s self-titled 1969 album. Nelson has his own history with the song, as Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real covered “Up On Cripple Creek” several times in 2017 with tourmate Nikki Lane and her band. Nelson also sang the song numerous times while participating in The Last Waltz Tour 2024.
Nelson handled lead vocals on Monday’s rendition at Bethel Woods. Fiddler Jake Simpson moved to acoustic guitar for the cover, while Eli Salus-Kleiner played the song’s signature clavinet part and pedal steel guitarist Dakota Holden shifted to organ. Bassist Corey McCormick and percussionist Tato Melgar rounded out the lineup.
