Black Crowes Dust Off Stooges Cover After 27 Years Near Detroit

The Black Crowes and Whiskey Myers Southern Hospitality Tour rolled into Pine Knob Music Theatre near Detroit on Saturday. The Crowes nodded to influential Michigan-born band The Stooges by dusting off a rare cover of “1969.”

Frontman Chris Robinson and guitarist Rich Robinson led their band through the favorite “Remedy” to kick off The Black Crowes’ set in Clarkston, Michigan. The song joined three other tracks originally appearing on the rockers’ second album, 1992’s The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, alongside “Sting Me,” “My Morning Song” and “Thorn In My Pride.”

The Black Crowes also delivered four choice covers throughout the concert including their recently debuted take on Led Zeppelin deep cut “The Rover” as well as The Velvet Underground's “Oh Sweet Nuthin'” and The Crowes’ classic cover of Otis Reddings’s “Hard To Handle.”

The rockers closed the concert with the fourth and final cover, The Stooges’ “1969.” Formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967 and fronted by the iconic Iggy Pop, The Stooges released their self-titled debut album in 1969. The record opens with the aptly titled “1969.”

The Black Crowes delivered a faithful rendition, belted by Chris Robinson and complete with the Bo Diddley beat. Just the second Black Crowes performance of the song, the band last played “1969” back in 1999.
