The Black Crowes Break Out Ry Cooder Cover In Maryland

The Black Crowes have been mining their extensive live repertoire for gold this summer, a trend that continued on Tuesday night at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The Columbia, Maryland stop of the band’s Southern Hospitality Tour with Whiskey Myers ended with a rare cover of “Boomer’s Story” by Ry Cooder.

The group led by vocalist Chris Robinson and his brother, guitarist Rich Robinson, followed Whiskey Myers’ set with a 17-song performance. While The Black Crowes played such beloved favorites as “Jealous Again,” “Wiser Time,” “Hard To Handle,” “She Talks To Angels” and “Remedy” at Merriweather Post Pavilion, they also worked in a series of deep cuts.

“Under A Mountain,” the first of three tour debuts, filled the five-slot. The song from 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm hadn’t been played since last August. The Black Crowes followed a few tunes later with the tour’s first version of Warpaint gem “Goodbye Daughters Of The Revolution.” Additionally, the set was highlighted by the band’s second take on The Rolling Stones classic “You Got The Silver” and fourth “Girl From A Pawnshop” of 2026.

“Thanks for coming to the ol’ Southern Hospitality night out on the town,” Chris Robinson told the crowd when The Black Crowes returned for their encore. “We’d like to play an old … we used to do this one quite a bit … it’s an old traveling song before we go on our way.”

Rich Robinson then kicked off the poignant “Boomer’s Story” encore. The Black Crowes hadn’t performed the title track from Ry Cooder’s 1972 album since November 16, 2013. “Boomer’s Story” had previously been played regularly by the band between 1996 and 2013.
