Sturgill Simpson Debuts INXS Cover In Los Angeles

Sturgill Simpson brought his Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds outfit to The Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Friday, as part of the Mutiny For The Masses Tour. The performance near Los Angeles included a debut cover of “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS.

Simpson played guitar throughout the nearly three-hour long concert while backed by drummer/vocalist Miles “Easy Luvin” Miller, guitarist Laur “Little Joe” Joamets, bassist Kevin “Black Daddy” Black and keyboardist/saxophonist Robbie “Raw B” Crowell. The recently embarked upon tour comes in support of their new studio album, Mutiny After Midnight.

Along with selections from that album, the main set also featured a fitting cover of The Doors’ “L.A. Woman,” as well as William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water” and When in Rome’s “The Promise.” Simpson further drew on material from across his catalog, playing songs off Sound & Fury, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Cuttin’ Grass, Vol. 1 and High Top Mountain.

Other newly introduced covers by Simpson on the Mutiny For The Masses Tour include Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime” and Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” The Mutiny For The Masses Tour continues on Tuesday, September 15 at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, California. A livestream of The Greek concert is available to nugs subscribers, who can also stream The Forum and other shows from the tour as well.
