Sturgill Simpson made an unexpected return to the stage Wednesday night, playing a surprise Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds show at Nashville’s The Cobra. The 25-song performance featured a slew of live debuts, with much of the focus on songs from Simpson’s 2026 album Mutiny After Midnight, and culminated with his first known performance of Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.”

The pop-up show was announced roughly two hours before doors opened. Tickets for the 200-capacity venue were priced at just $25, giving a small number of fans the chance to see Simpson’s first full performance since he wrapped his 2025 tour at Red Rocks on September 17, 2025.

Simpson and The Dark Clouds — drummer/vocalist Miles “Easy Luvin” Miller, guitarist Laur “Little Joe” Joamets, bassist Kevin “Black Daddy” Black and keyboardist/saxophonist Robbie “Raw B” Crowell — began the 2-hour, 55-minute performance with “A Good Look” before working through an eclectic set that offered a preview of what could be in store when the band launches its upcoming tour. The anything-goes atmosphere extended beyond the music, with a go-go dancer taking to a pole at the front of the stage during portions of the performance.

Among the biggest takeaways from the setlist was the number of Mutiny After Midnight songs making their live debuts. Simpson unveiled “Make America Fuk Again,” “Stay On That,” “Everybody’s Welcome,” “Venus,” “Excited Delirium,” “Ain’t That A Bitch,” “Viridescent,” “Don’t Let Go” and “Situation” for the first time.

The new material was mixed with songs from throughout Simpson’s catalog, including “Welcome to Earth (Pollywog),” “It Ain’t All Flowers,” “Best Clockmaker On Mars,” “All Said and Done,” “Fastest Horse In Town,” “Brace for Impact (Live a Little)” and “Call To Arms.”

As is often the case with Simpson, the set also made room for some unexpected covers. He performed Prince’s “Purple Rain,” Bad Company’s “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” Eddie Murphy’s “Party All the Time” and William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” “Feel Like Makin’ Love” was a Simpson/Johnny Blue Skies live debut.

The night ended with another first as Simpson and The Dark Clouds took on Talking Heads’ “Life During Wartime.” The song, originally released on Talking Heads’ 1979 album Fear Of Music, was a live debut for Simpson/Johnny Blue Skies. “Life During Wartime” followed “Call To Arms” and included a reprise of the song. Fan-shot footage of the performance has since surfaced.

Simpson and The Dark Clouds will soon embark on the Mutiny For The Masses Tour. The 29-date North American run begins September 4 at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, and features the band playing without opening acts.

Wednesday night’s nearly three-hour set suggests fans attending the Mutiny For The Masses Tour should be prepared for a lengthy evening. Johnny Blue Skies & The Dark Clouds previously toured extensively behind 2024’s Passage Du Desir, with the band becoming known for marathon performances that stretched to three hours.
