Black Crowes Dust Off Gram Parsons Cover To Launch Europe Tour In Manchester

The Black Crowes continued a deep dive into their massive live repertoire last night with the band’s first performance of Gram Parsons’ “She” since 2013. The latest breakout of the summer was played at Albert Hall in Manchester, England, where The Crowes kicked off a 10-date tour of Europe.

“She” joins a string of cover revivals trotted out by the rockers over the past two months, following the return of “Boomer’s Story” by Ry Cooder, Delaney & Bonnie’s “Poor Elijah / Tribute to Johnson,” “Feelin’ Alright?” by Traffic and Faces' “Three Button Hand Me Down.”

Additionally, the first North American leg of The Black Crowes’ Southern Hospitality Tour with Whiskey Myers has seen the band debut their versions of The Rolling Stones classic “Dancing With Mr. D” and AC/DC's “Riff Raff” after trotting out “Bitch” in Tokyo.

The return of “She” after 13 years came towards the tail end of The Black Crowes’ 15-song main set in Manchester. Rich Robinson fronted the band and played acoustic guitar on the song Gram Parsons was inspired to write by Emmylou Harris for his 1973 debut solo album, GP.

Earlier, The Crowes loaded the setlist with classics, including “Remedy,” “Jealous Again,” “Wiser Time” and “Soul Singing.” Other recently revived covers were found in the setlist as “Poor Elijah / Tribute to Johnson” was performed in the six-slot and the band said farewell with a “Three Button Hand Me Down” encore.

The Black Crowes continue their European Tour tonight (Friday, June 26) with an appearance at the State Fayre festival in Chlemsford. The lineup for the event’s first of three days also features Kings of Leon, Molly Tuttle, Steven Wilson Jr. and more.
