After pulling off live debuts and deep cuts in Australia, The Black Crowes landed in Japan on Tuesday for the first of two shows at Zepp DiverCity in Tokyo. Frontman Chris Robinson and guitarist Rich Robinson opted to introduce a cover of “Bitch” by The Rolling Stones for the first night’s encore.
The Black Crowes last performed in Japan when they toured there in 2022. Their setlist on Tuesday in Tokyo presented just one song from their recently released album, A Pound Of Feathers, with “Cruel Streak” arriving in the third slot.
The Zepp DiverCity playlist pulled from across The Black Crowes’ body of work, with favorites like “Jealous Again,” “Wiser Time,” “She Talks to Angels” and “Remedy” among the evening’s selections. Longtime staple, Otis Redding’s “Hard To Handle,” and The Velvet Underground’s “Oh, Sweet Nuthin’” – sung by Rich Robinson – were the covers entered into the main set.
At the start of the encore, Chris Robinson coyishly asked if the audience liked The Beatles before leading his bandmates through The Rolling Stones’ “Bitch.” The song appeared on The Stones’ 1971 album, Sticky Fingers.
Following their second show in Tokyo today (Wednesday, April 15), The Black Crowes will team with Whiskey Myers for their co-headlining Southern Hospitality Tour, which starts mid-May.
