Guster & Jerry Harrison Perform The Modern Lovers’ ‘Roadrunner’ At Sound Summit

Guster tapped Jerry Harrison for a performance of The Modern Lovers “Roadrunner” during the band’s set Saturday at the 2026 Sound Summit. Harrison also performed a set of Talking Heads music at the annual event held atop Mount Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California.

“Roadrunner” was written by Jonathan Richman and first recorded by The Modern Lovers in 1972. The band, who broke up in 1974, later released the song on their 1976 self-titled debut album, which featured Richman, Harrison, Ernie Brooks and David Robinson. Following The Modern Lovers disbandment, Harrison went on to join Talking Heads in 1977 alongside David Byrne, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz.

Guster, who originated near Boston, shared details of the collaboration in a social media post following the show, noting that The Modern Lovers’ debut album holds particular significance for its members due to its Massachusetts ties.

“The first Modern Lovers record is seminal for the Gusters because we’re IN LOVE WITH MASSACHUSETTS,” Guster said referencing the song’s lyrics. “What a dream to share the stage with a legend.”
