Tedeschi Trucks Band pulled into the Atlanta area on Tuesday for a concert with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre. Jason Isbell and surprise guest Zac Brown each teamed with TTB to perform a classic rock cover during the show in Alpharetta.
Isbell And The 400 Unit kicked off the evening by performing a 16-song set. TTB co-leader Susan Tedeschi emerged towards the end of the frame to lend her talents to a cover of Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Let Me Roll It.” Tedeschi and Isbell passed the mic on the vocals before Susan laid down a fiery solo on her Les Paul guitar.
“Let Me Roll It,” which was originally released by Paul McCartney’s “other band” on their iconic 1973 album Band On The Run, is a recent addition to the Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit repertoire. The group debuted the cover last month in Iowa City and have since performed the song five additional times, including with Patterson Hood at Sun Sand And Soul last Friday in Miramar Beach, Florida.
“That’s Susan Tedeschi! Y’all stick around for their show,” Isbell exclaimed after the collaboration. “Thank you, Jason. How about Jason Isbell and his fabulous band?,” Tedeschi replied.
Tedeschi Trucks Band then took the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre for a marathon set of their own. Following a trend at most shows this tour, the 12-piece ensemble began their night with songs from their recently released album Future Soul. A one-two punch of “Crazy Cryin'” and “I Got You” started the set in the same way the record does.
The group went on to surround covers of Derek And The Dominos’ “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Keep On Growing” with the title track and “Devil Be Gone” from Future Soul. An expansive “Let Me Get By” and take on The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup” were then followed by the team-up with Jason Isbell.
Isbell was on hand for the centerpiece of the set, a nearly 20-minute version of The Allman Brothers Band classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” TTB’s guest was no stranger to the song having performed the instrumental 10 times with The 400 Unit.
Longtime ABB member Derek Trucks and Jason Isbell traded licks throughout the lengthy “Liz Reed.” Other members of the TTB also had turns in the solo spotlight. The band closed the set, sans guests, with the ensuing “Made Up Mind.”
Susan Tedeschi called upon Atlanta’s own Zac Brown to take the stage at the beginning of the encore. Brown came out to huge cheers from the crowd, while Tedeschi dedicated the subsequent “Feelin’ Alright?” to the late Dave Mason. Zac Brown, who was without his guitar, traded lead vocal duties with Tedeschi on the Traffic cover. The pair also harmonized on the choruses of the classic rock radio staple.
Tedeschi Trucks Band said farewell by performing the Joe Cocker-popularized “Space Captain.” Tonight, the outfit links up with JJ Grey & Mofro in Raleigh for a double-bill.
