Tedeschi Trucks Band Honors Dave Mason With Rare Traffic Cover At Sun, Sand & Soul

Tedeschi Trucks Band paid tribute to the late Dave Mason on Thursday, closing the first night of their third annual Sun, Sand & Soul Beach Weekend in Miramar Beach, Florida with a rarely played cover of Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?” Mason, the Traffic co-founder who wrote the classic rock staple in 1968, died Sunday at his home in Nevada at the age of 79.

Sun, Sand & Soul runs through Saturday on Florida’s Gulf Shore, with two TTB headlining sets as part of the offerings. Taj Mahal and his Phantom Blues Band and Honey Hounds also performed at the event on Thursday.

“Feelin’ Alright?” was the lone encore last night after the Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered a career-spanning set. The group led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks opened with a run of “Crazy Cryin’,” “I Got You” and “Who Am I,” the same sequence that begins their 2026 album, Future Soul. TTB also sprinkled in several covers debuted during their recent Beacon Theatre residency, including The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup,” Frank Zappa’s “Willie The Pimp” and a medley connecting “You Can Make It If You Try” and “Everyday People” by Sly & The Family Stone.

“I’m just going to have to dedicate this one to an amazing musician, an amazing songwriter, who just passed recently who was a dear friend of ours — Dave Mason,” Susan Tedeschi said when the band returned for the encore. “This is one of his songs. We’re sending it out to him in heaven, jamming with all the cool guys.”

TTB had only played “Feelin’ Alright?” four previous times according to Setlist.FM statistics. Dave Mason led the group’s debut “Feelin’ Alright?” performance during their famed Lockn' 2015 Mad Dogs & Englishmen tribute.

The most recent time before last night came in November, when Teddy Swims led them through the song at Rock Hall’s Class of 2025 Induction Ceremony to honor inductee Joe Cocker. “Feelin’ Alright?” has been covered by dozens of acts over the years, with Cocker’s 1969 version the first to chart in the U.S.
