Former Drive-By Truckers Bandmates Patterson Hood & Jason Isbell Reunite At Sun Sand And Soul

Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood once again performed with his former bandmate Jason Isbell, the latest occasion happening at the Sun Sand And Soul festival in Miramar Beach, Florida. Hood’s sit-in came at the end of Isbell’s set with his band The 400 Unit.

Drive By Truckers were also part of the 2026 Sun Sand And Soul lineup, led by hosts Tedeschi Trucks Band. Isbell joined DBT in 2001 and was a member of the band through March 2007. Isbell and Drive-By Truckers have performed together in various configurations since his departure – including special trio sets with Hood and DBT’s Mike Cooley.

“I used to be in this man’s rock ‘n’ roll band and it was a good time,” Isbell said while introducing Hood. “It was a good time for me — it wasn’t always a good time for him, but I had a good time.”

“It was a pretty god damn good time,” Hood conceded. “Sometimes it was a little too damn good at the time. That’s all right. We were young men.”

“In between acting like a fool, I wrote a couple songs for that band,” Isbell added. “And this is one of the songs that I wrote.”

The audience was then treated to “Outfit,” which was recorded by DBT for their 2003 album, Decoration Day. After “Outfit,” Isbell kept Hood around at Sun Sand And Soul for a subsequent cover of Paul McCartney & Wings’ classic “Let Me Roll It.”
