Wednesday & Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood Cover Big Star In Portland

Drive-By Truckers guitarist Patterson Hood sat in with his “favorite band” — Asheville, North Carolina-based Wednesday — last night during their second of two sold-out shows at Revolution Hall in Portland. Hood and Wednesday put together a joint cover of “September Gurls” by power pop icons Big Star.
“Tonight I got reminded why I fell in love with Rock & Roll in the first place,” Hood wrote after attending Wednesday’s Revolution Hall show on Tuesday. “Left the house pretty worn out from [a] very busy day and was lifted and set right by an absolutely fantastic set by my favorite band. [Wednesday] just gets better and better all the time. Tonight they showed us all how it’s done. Great opening set from Gouge Away (from Portland). Another great night of music [at Revolution Hall].”
Along with bringing out Hood, Wednesday’s second PDX show featured Christina Michelle of openers Gouge Away joining the band for “Phish Pepsi.”
“Anyone saying Rock & Roll is dead needs to go see this show to know that statement is bullshit,” Hood wrote after his sit-in with Wednesday. “They are the real deal and it’s never been better.”
Written by Alex Chilton, “September Gurls” appeared on Big Star’s second album, 1974’s Radio City. The song had been performed by Wednesday multiple times in recent months.
