Minnesota Get-Together: Sierra Ferrell Joins Dave Matthews Band At Mystic Lake Amphitheater Debut

Dave Matthews Band held their first concert at the newly opened Mystic Lake Amphitheater in the Minneapolis suburb of Shakopee, Minnesota, on Monday night. The band welcomed Sierra Ferrell for a pair of covers during the main set, and the singer-songwriter returned for a duet with Dave Matthews at the start of the encore.

DMB was originally scheduled to be one of the first acts to play Mystic Lake Amphitheater, but inclement weather forced their June 23 concert to be postponed to last night. The show was the group’s first in Minnesota since 2022.

Matthews and DMB were outspoken critics earlier this year of Operation Metro Surge that brought large numbers of ICE and federal agents to the Twin Cities area last winter. The frontman, who often expresses his thoughts on current political topics, spoke to the crowd in Shakopee on Monday night, in part stating:

“I don’t want to remind anybody of maybe somewhat unpleasant things, but I have to say, just from the outside, watching this city that I already loved, and watching the way that y’all reacted to people attacking your neighbors, through the violence that was put on your streets, and the way that you all reacted with such grace, and such beauty, and such peacefulness.

“I swear, you may not know it from here, but everywhere in the world, people saw what you did and how you reacted, and you inspired everybody to stand up against things like that.

“Thank you so much for being such a great town, and such a welcoming town, and such a good place for so many people. Thank you for coming out this evening. Thank you all so much for being.”

Matthews also talked to the crowd before welcoming Sierra Ferrell to the stage. He described “begging” Ferrell to stick around after her performance Sunday at the Minnesota State Fair.

The guest spot began with Ferrell augmenting a rendition of “Long Black Veil.” Next came a collaborative take on The Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down,” which the full Dave Matthews Band had not played together before in concert.

Ferrell was summoned back to the stage once again at the beginning of the encore. Matthews typically begins encores by playing a song solo and then is joined by the rest of his bandmates. Last evening, Ferrell and Matthews started the finale by dueting on his recently introduced original song, “Paper Town.” A full-band “Grey Street” completed the show.
