Dogs In A Pile Debut Smashing Pumpkins Cover In Asbury Park

Dogs In A Pile returned to their hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey on Saturday for their third annual concert at The Stone Pony Summer Stage. The quintet used the opportunity to unveil new material, as the two-set show featured debuts of two new originals and a cover of “Cherub Rock.”

The band — consisting of guitarists Jimmy Law and Brian Murray, keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan, bassist Sam Lucid and drummer Joey Babick — devoted the first 20 minutes of the evening to a sequence of “Unfocused” and “Ugly Song.” Lucid then stepped into the center of the stage to handle lead vocals on DIAP’s live debut of “I Got You.” Keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan handled bass duties on a catchy new original featuring elements of punk, rock and reggae.

Dogs In A Pile’s next debut came towards the middle of their second set at The Stone Pony Summer Stage. Brian Murray was on acoustic guitar as he guided the band through “Asbury,” a poignant ode to the group’s hometown. Another tribute to Asbury Park followed with the improvisational centerpiece of the set, a +23-minute “Tillie.” The live staple takes its name from the grinning figure famously painted on the side of the Palace Amusements building in Asbury Park.

Just when it appeared Dogs were about to transition from “Tillie” into a take on the Grateful Dead classic “Truckin’,” they instead made a swerve with Babick hitting the drum lick that starts “Cherub Rock.” Kaplan showed off his multi-instrumental prowess for the second time on Saturday night by playing guitar on the cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ hit single from 1993’s Siamese Dream.

Jimmy Law sang DIAP’s first-ever take on “Cherub Rock.” The version remained faithful to the original with Law delivering a powerful guitar solo before ending the song.

After a set-closing “6 Little Lies,” Dogs In A Pile kicked off their encore with the David Bowie classic “Let’s Dance.” The band tacked on a well-jammed “Thomas Duncan Pt. 3” to punctuate the night.
