Eggy and Dogs In A Pile linked up on Wednesday for a co-headlining show at 24th Street Park in Virginia Beach. After separate sets that leaned into their respective flavors of groove-driven, improvisation-heavy rock, the two bands reconvened on stage together to close the night with a collaborative cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Dogs In A Pile kicked off the latest installment of the Oceanfront Music Concert Series with a 90-minute performance. The pride of Asbury Park, New Jersey delivered a set loaded with live staples, including “Didn’t You Know?,” “You Didn’t Hear It From Me,” “Ugly Song,” “The Bag” and “G-Song.”

The sextet also worked in covers of the Grateful Dead’s “Mr. Charlie” and “Pinball Wizard” by The Who, along with their sixth-ever performance of the recently debuted original “Throw It Away.” DIAP wrapped the frame with a potent, improv-laced version of fan-favorite “Chop Shop.”

Eggy came out next for a 90-minute set of their own. The band — guitarist Jake Brownstein, drummer Alex Bailey, keyboardist Dani Battat and bassist Mike Goodman — took the stage to pre-recorded music before launching into the Beatles-esque “Sweaters For Strawman.”

The four-piece moved forward with “Reflections” from their The Ballad Of Lucifer suite. Next, Eggy romped through a well-jammed version of the anthemic “Laurel,” which bled into a cover of CSN’s “Southern Cross.” It was then back to Blucifer for a “Falsities and Fire” that gave way to “Parceled Serotonin.”

Eggy followed by blowing out the Big Thief track “Time Escaping” ahead of the reflective “Shallow Rivers” and a “Threw The Mist” featuring teases of two songs played earlier (“Shallow Rivers” and “Parceled Serotonin”) from Brownstein. The quartet romped through “Trixieville” to bring the set to a close.

Dani Battat addressed the crowd while the stage was being set for the two-band collaboration. Battat talked about the pleasure of performing with their good friends Dogs In A Pile. “When our ships get to dock here in Virginia Beach together, we’re so grateful and appreciative of you all being here,” he said before bringing out DIAP.

Eggy and Dogs In A Pile proceeded to throw down a blazing version of “Let’s Dance.” The Nile Rodgers co-write from Bowie’s 1983 album of the same name featured Dogs guitarist Brian Murray on lead vocals. A drum breakdown and bass duel gave both group’s rhythm sections a chance to shine. The cover came to a close with Jake Browstein and DIAP’s Jimmy Law engaging in an intense call-and-response segment.
