Olivia Rodrigo’s summer spent headlining festivals around the world landed at Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park on Friday. The set featured a surprise appearance by members of Weezer, who joined Rodrigo for two of their hit songs off their 1994 self-titled, debut album.

Rodrigo took a moment in the midst of her Lolla set to speak to the crowd assembled at one of the two main stages.

“I’m looking out into the audience and I’m seeing a lot of young faces and I’m wondering if this is anybody’s first concert tonight,” Rodrigo said. “I think you always remember your first concert, it’s a very, very special moment.

“I remember my first concert. It was a very memorable night. I watched this incredible band. I am so over the moon because tonight that incredible band is here tonight to play a few songs. Would you welcome please, Weezer!”

Weezer guitarists Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell and bassist Scott Shriner then joined Rodrigo and her band. The surprise kicked off with “Buddy Holly,” which Rodrigo called one of her “favorite songs of all time” and saw her sharing lead vocals with Cuomo.

The surprise sit-in continued with Cuomo and his bandmates assisting on “Say It Ain’t So.” Rodrigo and Cuomo again traded off singing lead on the final song of the collaboration

“Wow, that was fucking amazing,” Rodrigo said after the Weezer members left. “If you could tell little Olivia that, she would flip her shit.”

Rodrigo added that Weezer was also her drummer Jordi Radnoti’s first concert and noted “Weezer raised a whole generation of musicians.”
