Frontman Matt Shultz praised Ozzy Osbourne ahead of the special performance in Chicago.

Cage The Elephant was among the many bands playing the first day of Lollapalooza on Thursday at Grant Park in Chicago. The group added itself among the many recent tributes to Ozzy Osbourne, who died on July 22 at age 76, with a poignant cover of Black Sabbath’s “Changes.”

Frontman Matt Shultz spoke to the audience watching the band’s performance on one of the festival’s two main stages. Near the end of Cage The Elephant’s set, Shultz stated:

“We’re going to try something, but before we do, I just want to say this: this past week we lost – and to say a legend would be to not do it justice – but a beautiful human being. Thinking about this song, I think about all the little babies out in the world. I just became a father myself.

“Ozzy was a beautiful baby who grew up to be a beautiful human being. So this goes out to all the beautiful babies in the world who will grow to be beautiful human beings and do beautiful things.”

Shultz then led his bandmates through Black Sabbath’s “Changes,” with Nick Bockrath delivering a blistering solo on his Travis Bean guitar. “Changes” appeared on Sabbath’s fourth album, 1972’s Vol. 4.
