Patti Smith Honors Glen Hansard In Milan

Patti Smith came to Milan on Wednesday as part of a summer run across Europe. The esteemed singer-songwriter paid tribute to fellow songsmith Glen Hansard, who passed away yesterday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Smith began the concert with her classic “Dancing Barefoot.” Following a cover of The Doors’ “The Crystal Ship” and “Break It Up,” off Smith’s lauded debut album Horses, she dedicated her song “Nine” to Glen Hansard.

Smith and bandmate Tony Shanahan continued the Hansard nod by performing his collaboration with Markéta Irglová “Falling Slowly.” Hansard co-wrote the song with Irglová for the 2007 film Once, which Hansard also starred in. “Falling Slowly” won Best Original Song at the 2008 Academy Awards.

Patti Smith wrapped the concert with her anthem “People Have The Power,” a song Hansard joined Smith on last year in Dublin. Listen to Smith’s full concert from Milan below:
