My Morning Jacket Releases ‘The Waterfall II’ Studio Album

When My Morning Jacket came away from sessions held in 2014 at the Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California, they had three albums of material worthy of release. MMJ decided to cram two-thirds of the songs onto 2015’s The Waterfall and held off on issuing the rest as a complete LP … until today. The Waterfall II is out now via ATO Records.

Frontman Jim James spurred the decision to release the LP after “Spinning My Wheels” came on his device via shuffle mode as he was taking a walk during a period of self-quarantine. “Struck by the song’s enduring relevance, James revisited the other tracks reserved from the Panoramic House sessions and found that they invited a welcome moment of self-reflection—an outcome perhaps even more perfectly suited to the chaos of the current day than the circumstances of their recording,” noted a press release announcing the LP.

The Waterfall II contains 10 songs, two of which have been played live by My Morning Jacket. “Welcome Home” was premiered at the band’s 2012 Newport Folk Festival set, while “Magic Bullet” was debuted on New Year’s Eve 2017. The Waterfall II is coming to vinyl on Friday, August 28.
