Fri. Oct. 3 at 8pm $12 adv./$12 door dance- ages 21+ Skip Spence Tribute Concert Omar spence, Tiran Porter , Dale Ockerman, Nico spence, stephen Krilanovich and Guests Talk about interconnectivity. Skip played in Quicksilver, Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane. Tiran Porter played in the Doobie Brothers and Moby Grape. Dale Ockerman started in Quicksilver and later played in the Doobie Brothers, and with members of Moby Grape. Omar is Skip's son and sounds remarkably and effortlessly like his dad. Nico is Omar's son, Skip's grandson. Stephen plays with Dale and Tiran in the White Album Ensemble, the Chain of Fools, and Room with a View, as well as being a longtime friend of the Spence family. This is one all- star band with deep history and a camaraderie that is truly family. These guys love to play together. While formed as a tribute to Skip, this ensemble is a powerfully creative unit. About Skip Spence: "The original Jefferson Airplane drummer (although he was a guitarist who had never played drums before joining the group), Spence left after their first album ( after writing "Blues from an Airplane" with Marty Balin, then writing the classic "My Best Friend" for their 'Surrealistic Pillow" LP- to join/ co-found Moby Grape. Like every member of that legendary band, he was a strong presence on their first album, playing guitar, singing, and writing " Omaha ", and "Indifference". Spence cut "Oar", in 1969. Much rawer and more homespun than the early Grape records, it features Spence on all (mostly acoustic) guitars, percussion, and vocals. With an overriding blues influence and doses of country, gospel, and acid freakout thrown in, this sounds something like Mississippi Fred McDowell imbued with the spirit of Haight-Ashbury 1967. Skip died April 16, 1999, just two days short of his 54th birthday; the tribute album, "More Oar: A Tribute to Alexander "Skip" Spence", featuring performances by Robert Plant, Beck, and Tom Waits, appeared just a few weeks later . ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
