Heartical Roots album release party plus Native Elements

San Francisco’s Heartical Roots return to our stage after a long absence, with a pre-CD release concert celebrating the completion of the group’s new album, full of original conscious roots rock reggae, old school Studio One dub and dance hall beats. Heartical Roots is led by the songwriting team of FredI and Ras Joseph. Coming from Kingston, Jamaica, lyricist, poet and singer FredI has collaborated with Detroit native Ras Joseph (lead guitar and vocals) for 21 years. They funnel all they have learned from their musical and social justice heroes into a unique sound celebration, with lyrics that present a clear understanding of the human condition and pertinent social issues, backed by a classic rhythm section, featuring Michael Bauce on keyboards, bassist Wadell Bell and drummer Lou Nueberger. Native Elements is one of the largest (with full horn section) and hardest-working groups on the local reggae scene, having played to dancing throngs from San Francisco’s Reggae in the Park to Humboldt County’s Reggae on the River, with their music featured in the film “Debut.” They performed at last February’s Ashkenaz Bob Marley Birthday Celebration. The Bay Area’s cultural and musical diversity has fueled the band’s creative flow from its start nearly 20 years ago, with musicians who had grown up together since elementary school, playing in garage bands and skateboarding through Daly City and South San Francisco. After explorations with rock, funk, blues, and R&B, Native Elements set its repertoire firmly in the roots-reggae tradition, combining conscious, uplifting lyrics with an instrumental fabric that includes improvised solos, lovers rock, roots, and dancehall wrapped cozily in what the band calls its bright “frisco-pino” treatment.
