Luther cut his teeth as a former member of the Muddy Water's band before going out into the blues circuit in Chicago, over time earning a well-deserved reputation as a blues master. And now we can call him our own, as he recently moved to the Granite state. Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson emerged as the bona fide leader of the West Side guitar style with his unique blend of blues, soul and funk. His incredible guitar riffs and plaintive vocals leave no doubt that Johnson is a blues master at the top of his game. After serving his apprenticeship with Muddy Waters (he is one of the last direct links!) and Magic Sam, Luther has developed his own signature style characterized by a strong rhythmic component and deeply moving vocal phrasings. "Guitar Junior" earned his moniker by performing a blistering blend of single string playing on the electric guitar augmented by powerful chordal accompaniment. Magic Sam immediately signed him upon hearing the teenage "Little Junior" sing Sam Cooke's "Somebody Have Mercy" at a club on Chicago's West Side in the early '60s. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Jay McShann, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, John Hammond, the late Jimmy Witherspoon, Dr. John, Maria Muldaur, Roomful of Blues (HE FOUNDED ROOMFUL!)… every one of these names has shared recording studio space or stage time with a man who is a legend in the blues community. Guitarist. Bandleader. Songwriter. Singer. Producer. Session musician. The Duke is a one-man cheering section for the blues, in all its forms and permutations. BB King calls Duke, “One of the Greats.” We are honored to have these two blues pioneers on the same stage on the same night. A must see for any blues fan!
