Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra, Opus 30 About This Performance The nickname “The Philosopher” for Haydn’s Symphony No. 22 is thought to be inspired by a musical “question and answer” in the first movement of this enchanting symphony. Danielpour pays tribute to the plight of the Iranian people in Darkness in the Ancient Valley, a co-commission between the PSO and the Nashville Symphony that features soprano star Hila Plitmann. Richard Strauss’ powerful Also sprach Zarathustra, inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s book of the same name, was notably featured in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
