All-Beethoven Program: Eleven Bagatelles, Op. 119 Sonata in A flat, Op. 110 Six Bagatelles, Op. 126 Sonata in E flat, Op. 81a ("Les Adieux") The American pianist Peter Serkin comes from a rich tradition – he is the son of the legendary pianist Rudolf Serkin and descended from a dynasty of great musicians (the Busch family) – but tradition is the last thing you think about when you hear him play. Serkin gives you so much more to think about. He has been playing professionally since his teens (he won his first Grammy at the age of 19), and his artistry has deepened in ways that seem to defy the superficial, glitzy world we live in. Serkin’s NJPAC recital next spring is a fascinating, substantial all-Beethoven program, the kind of repertoire that was his father’s signature, but you can bet it won’t quite sound like any other Beethoven program you’ve heard. Serkin’s intellectual grasp of music is a transforming thing in performance – he has the ability to convince you that you're hearing for the first time music you’ve actually heard again and again. The American composer Ned Rorem has written about Serkin’s artistry: “His uniqueness lies, as I hear it, in a friendly rather than over-awed approach to the classics, which he nonetheless plays with the care and brio that is in the family blood, and he's not afraid to be ugly. He approaches contemporary music with the same depth as he does the classics, and he is unique among the superstars in that he approaches it at all.” A passion for new music. Not afraid to be ugly. Care and brio. That pretty much describes Beethoven, doesn’t it?
