Watch Warren Haynes’ Blues-Infused ‘Night Life’ & ‘Midnight Rider’ Performances At Willie Nelson’s 90th

Former The Allman Brothers Band/current Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes was one of many participants in this weekend’s Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 birthday concerts in Los Angeles. Haynes brought a bit of the blues to the Hollywood Bowl with sizzling performances of Nelson’s “Night Life” and The Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider.”

Additional Willie 90 participants included Keith Richards, Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Bob Weir, Margo Price, Billy Strings, Dave Matthews, and many more. Among the members of the house band were bassist Don Was, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and keyboardist Benmont Tench.

Haynes joined the house band on Saturday, which was Nelson’s 90th birthday, for a soulful performance of The Allman Brother classic, “Midnight Rider.” Nelson recorded a successful cover of “Midnight Rider” for the 1979 feature film, The Electric Horseman, in which he also acted alongside stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

For his performance last night at the second Willie 90 concert, Haynes took up one of Nelson’s early compositions, “Night Life.” Written by Nelson in 1960, “Night Life” was a hit for Ray Price in 1963, and later was recorded by Nelson for his 1965 album, Country Willie – His Own Songs.
