Watch Willie Nelson & Billy Strings’ Live Debut Of Collaborative Song ‘California Sober’

Billy Strings was among Willie Nelson’s guests for his two-day, star-studded Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over the weekend. On Sunday, April 30, Billy and Willie teamed up for the live debut of their recently released single, “California Sober”

Nelson and Strings shared “California Sober” on Friday. “Willie’s music has helped shape so many of our lives, even if we don’t know it. It’s there,” Billy said in a statement upon the release of the collaborative single. “It’s woven into the fabric of our nation. I feel almost patriotic when I think of Willie Nelson. I will cherish this song for the rest of my life. I love you all. And Willie …Thank you.”

Strings kicked off Sunday’s festivities with a take on the Willie classic, “Whiskey River.” Nelson then emerged and the generational talents dueted on “California Sober.” Billy took a tasty ride on the tune before kicking it over to longtime Willie Nelson harmonica player Mickey Raphael and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench. Billy and Willie then brought the song home.
