Watch Keith Richards & Willie Nelson Prove They’ll ‘Live Forever’ At Hollywood Bowl Birthday Celebration

The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards made a surprise appearance at Sunday’s Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl. Richards came out to accompany Nelson on a pair of songs, including a cover of Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever.”

Richards’ unannounced appearance came near the end of the second of two all-star Long Story Short: Willie Nelson 90 concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Night one was held on Saturday, April 29, the day Nelson turned 90 years old.

Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Bob Weir, Billy Strings, Margo Price and many others participated in the weekend’s festivities. Nelson’s sons, Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson were also onstage at the Hollywood Bowl throughout both nights. The house band included bassist Don Was, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz and keyboardist Benmont Tench.

Richards came out for a cover of “We Had It All,” which was written by Donnie Fritts and Troy Seals and popularized by Waylon Jennings. Richards recorded a live version of “We Had It All” with Nelson for the latter’s 2004 live album/television special, Outlaws & Angels.

The 79-year-old Richards’ surprise Willie 90 performance also saw him join Nelson on Billy Joe Shaver’s “Live Forever.” Nelson recorded “Live Forever” with The Highwaymen for the supergroup’s 1994 album, The Road Goes on Forever. Nelson recorded another version of “Live Forever” with Lucinda Williams for the 2022 tribute album, Live Forever: A Tribute To Billy Joe Shaver.
