As reported, Umphrey’s McGee welcomed special guest drummers Ben Atkind of Goose and Ween‘s Claude Coleman Jr. at their concert in Asheville, North Carolina on Friday. Guitarist Daniel Donato also joined UM at their first of two shows at Salvage Station, where he sat-in on Umphrey’s original “Nothing Too Fancy” and a cover of Tyler Childers‘ “Whitehouse Road.”
Donato’s guest spot came after Umphrey’s McGee and Ben Atkind kicked off the second set by devoting 30 minutes to fan favorites “Plunger” and “In The Kitchen.” Atkind, on hand to fill in for Kris Myers while the UM drummer recovers from shoulder surgery, was still behind the kit when the leader of opening act Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country emerged.
“We have a new friend of ours gonna join us, please give it up for Daniel Donato,” UM keyboardist Joel Cummins told the crowd. Donato then took a spot between guitarist Jake Cinninger and bassist Ryan Stasik as “Nothing Too Fancy” began. The Nashville-based guitarist showed off his rhythm skills first before engaging Brendan Bayliss in a call-and-response segment. Cinninger soon got in on the action as all three guitarists were shredding at the same time.
After the turnaround, Umphrey’s and their guest feasted on a reggae-tinged progression with Donato utilizing a distorted wah tone. Daniel led a build to a powerful peak before going toe-to-toe with Cinninger to close out the 18-minute “Nothing Too Fancy.” Bayliss then asked the audience if it was okay if Daniel stayed up for another song. UM and Donato acknowledged the roars in approval by launching the South Bend, Indiana-formed band’s second “Whitehouse Road” of 2023. Donato unfurled a heroic solo between verses of the song off Childers’ 2017 debut album Purgatory.
