Mac Ayres Finally Gets Behind The Tiny Desk

Mac Ayres finally made it behind NPR Music’s Tiny Desk for a seven-song performance featuring material from across his catalog and the debut of the unreleased “Please Come Home.”

Ayres was originally slated to visit NPR’s Washington, D.C. offices before the COVID-19 pandemic altered those plans. Instead, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist recorded a Tiny Desk (Home) Concert in his basement in September 2020 that premiered two months later. Ayres handled vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards himself for the four-song performance, which ended with “Easy.”

This time around, Ayres brought a six-piece backing ensemble led by longtime collaborator and music director Declan Miers on bass. The seven-song set opened with “Sunny & 62” and continued with “Calvin’s Joint,” “Pickled Ginger” and “Comfortable Enough.”

Ayres then premiered “Please Come Home,” an unreleased song he co-wrote with Carrtoons. The pair previously worked together on “Never Let Me Go” from Ayres’ 2021 album Magic 8Ball. “Where U Goin’ Tonight?” followed before Ayres once again closed a Tiny Desk performance with “Easy,” the song from his 2017 debut project Drive Slow.

Mac Ayres will hit the road supporting Teddy Swims on September 12. Ayres opens for Swims through October 2.
