Umphrey’s McGee returned to Asheville, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday for a two-night stand at Salvage Station. Friday’s show featured special guests Ben Atkind of Goose, guitarist Daniel Donato and Ween drummer Claude Coleman Jr. The latter sat-in on a pair of Ween fan-favorites in his hometown of Asheville.

UM drummer Kris Myers is currently recovering from shoulder surgery leading the band to call upon guest drummers to fill in. Percussionist Andy Farag moved behind the kit for the opening pairing of “Loose Ends” and “Syncopated Strangers” before Claude emerged for two Ween covers and then Atkind took over drumming duties for the remainder of the concert on Friday.

Claude Coleman Jr. and Umphrey’s McGee treated fans in Asheville to takes on Ween’s “The Grobe” and “Transdermal Celebration.” Both songs were first performed by UM during their Godboner Meets Gene Ween set at Summer Camp in 2015. “The Grobe” was originally released by Ween on their 2000 studio album White Pepper. UM and Coleman tacked on a tasty jam to “The Grobe” in Asheville.

Ween initially issued “Transdermal Celebration” in 2003 on their Quebec LP. While “The Grobe” was last played by UM on March 16, 2018, the sextet’s most recent version of “Transdermal Celebration” came on October 18, 2019.
