My Morning Jacket returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre over the weekend for a pair of concerts at the idyllic Colorado venue. The eventful two-night stand saw the quintet premiere their take on Steely Dan's “Do It Again,” honor Ozzy Osbourne with a rare “Black Sabbath” cover, perform their 2005 LP Z in its entirety and share the stage with Melt's Veronica Stewart-Frommer.
On Friday, My Morning Jacket devoted their first set to a complete performance of Z in the same sequence found on the record. The band will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record at four additional upcoming tour stops. MMJ’s Z 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition reissue is set for release on October 3 through ATO Records.
Z-era b-side “How Could I Know” was selected to get Friday’s second set underway. Veronica Stewart-Frommer, of opening act Melt, then emerged to duet with MMJ frontman Jim James on his solo cut “Here In Spirit.” Next came “Half A Lifetime,” one of three tracks from the recently released album is played on Friday by the headliners.
My Morning Jacket went back to is for the subsequent “Everyday Magic” and then worked the LP’s “Squid Ink” within “Cobra,” which bled into “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2.” From there, the group returned to its Z days for “Where To Begin” from the Elizabethtown soundtrack and debuted a cover of Steely Dan’s 1972 hit “Do It Again” before wrapping night one with “Dancefloors.”

Saturday’s show was truly a career-spanning affair as My Morning Jacket worked through material from each of their 10 studio albums, besides Z, in the order the records were released. Jim James and bandmates bassist Tom Blankenship, drummer Patrick Hallahan, guitarist Carl Broemel and keyboardist Bo Koster looked to The Tennessee Fire (1999) for “The Dark” and “It’s About Twilight Now” ahead of At Dawn (2001) cuts “The Way That He Sings,” “X-Mas Curtain” and “Phone Went West” to kick off the gig.
It Still Moves (2003) was represented by “Steam Engine,” while Evil Urges (2008) tracks “I’m Amazed,” “Aluminum Park” and “Smokin’ From Shootin'” were followed by the Circuital (2011) trifecta “Victory Dance,” “Circuital” and “Holdin On To Black Metal.” Veronica Stewart-Frommer returned to help sing the latter.
“Spring (Among The Living)” off The Waterfall (2015) and a progession of multiple songs from The Waterfall II (2020), My Morning Jacket (2021) and is (2025) brought the main set to a close. My Morning Jacket started Saturday’s encore with a “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” dedicated to Diana Ross and then performed “Black Sabbath” for the first time since Halloween 2010. Black Sabbath co-founding frontman Ozzy Osbourne died at age 76 on July 22. Fan favorite “One Big Holiday” was tacked on for good measure to punctuate the evening and run.
