My Morning Jacket Announces ‘Z’ 20th Anniversary Deluxe Reissue

My Morning Jacket’s 2005 album, Z will be reissued in an expanded format in recognition of its 20th anniversary. ATO Records will release Z 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition on October 3, with an additional 14 new bonus tracks.

“October 4 is the 20th anniversary of our album Z,” said frontman Jim James. “It’s pretty wild to think about that. To celebrate two decades of it being out in the ether, we’re excited to be turning five of our shows into special Z anniversary shows, where we’ll play that album – and some other songs, don’t worry – front to back.”

James was referring to My Morning Jacket’s upcoming Z 20th anniversary concerts, which are slated for their Red Rocks show on August 15, as well as stops in Los Angeles (August 19), Brooklyn (October 16), Chicago (October 26) and Atlanta (November 1).

Co-produced with John Leckie, My Morning Jacket’s fourth album, Z, was the band’s first to feature its current lineup of James, keyboard player Bo Koster, guitarist Carl Broemel, bassist Tom Blankenship and drummer Patrick Hallahan. The Z 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition bonus track lead single, “Where To Begin,” was among the first songs Koster and Broemel (on pedal steel guitar) recorded with MMJ.

“That was one of the coolest things,” James noted, “that Carl could play pedal steel. We’d never had that before.”

“Where To Begin” was originally recorded for Cameron Crowe’s 2005 feature film Elizabethtown. Additional bonus tracks on the upcoming expanded edition of Z include several of James’ demos of now classic songs from the album, including “Wordless Chorus,” “Off the Record,” “Dondante,” “Knot Comes Loose” and others.
